In the summer of 2014, a viral social media craze known as the ‘Ice Bucket Challenge’ helped tremendously to raise global awareness of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), a rare neurodegenerative disease. Millions of dollars were also raised as a result of the challenge, which involved participants being videoed whilst pouring a bucket of ice-cold water over their heads, encouraging viewers of the video to donate money to ALS research and then nominating others to also take part in the challenge and repeat the process.

Prior to this, ALS was a disease which was largely unheard of by the general public.

The ‘Ice Bucket Challenge’ helped to increase awareness of the condition amongst individuals who were not personally affected by it, but for many, a full understanding of the disease is still lacking.
